Currently, the use of paints is so versatile that it is impossible to think of an industrial production line that does not have this stage. The painting stages are usually final finishing where a layer of paint is applied for aesthetic purposes or for functional purposes such as preventing corrosion processes. The use of paints is widely used, so the generation of waste from them is a problem that is present in most industries. The chemical composition of paints is usually complex and they are mostly made up of organic solvents that are not very “eco-friendly”, so it is vitally important to know how to manage paint sludge and residues.

What are paint sludge?

Paint sludge is a by-product produced in industrial processes where paint coats are applied. They are also produced in the industrial processes that synthesize the paints that will later be used in industry.
Paint sludge can be defined as complex materials composed of different elements such as uncured polymeric resins, pigments, curing agents, flotation agents and other minor ingredients included in its formulation. In addition, paint sludge contains water and a wide variety of organic solvents. All this leads to paint sludge being classified as hazardous waste and, therefore, requiring specific management.foto 2

What are hazardous waste?

Hazardous waste is material that, after disposal, can lead to the release of substances that are harmful to people’s health and/or to the environment. For this reason, there are strict mandatory management procedures.
In general, the main actions that must be fulfilled in the management of hazardous waste are the following:

  • Identification. The first stage of hazardous waste management is its correct characterization, including the maximum information related to its chemical composition and traceability.
  • Storage. After its characterization, proper labeling of the waste and its storage under conditions that keep the waste stable is essential.
  • Administrative regularization. This stage ranges from the authorization and registration of the production of hazardous waste to the periodic documentation of their management.
  • Definition of collection system. Another of the most important stages in the treatment of hazardous waste is the definition of a collection system for the same within the company, adapting the segregation routes.
  • Specify the collection of waste. For this, it is essential to have the maximum information on the waste, since it is vitally important to contact a company that is authorized to manage this type of waste.

As an environmental objective of a company, it is always necessary to have an action plan to minimize the production of hazardous waste, especially in those cases in which the production of hazardous waste is very high (more than 10 tons per year) or when the waste generated They have high toxicity.

How is paint sludge managed?

As we have indicated previously, paint sludge has a complex composition of chemical compounds, which makes its management expensive.
One of the main causes of this complexity is due to the fact that the presence of uncured resins forms a film when heated, providing a high viscosity to the mud.
For this reason, one of the most important focuses in the management of paint sludge is to carry out the process called “killing the paint”, which is the elimination of those compounds that increase the viscosity of the sludge.foto 4Among others, the main treatments of paint sludge are the following:

  • Coagulation of paint sludge. Coagulation is a chemical process in which coagulating agents are added that denature the paint that reaches the discharge water, eliminating its ability to adhere to the walls of the discharge system and favoring the formation of sludge.
  • Flocculation of paint sludge. The purpose of flocculant agents is to increase the buoyancy of the paints that make up the sludge, thus facilitating its separation and subsequent management. They are used in water-based paints as well as solvent-based ones.
  • Precipitation of metallic elements. This type of treatment is only used in paints that have metallic elements such as copper, zinc and nickel among others. To carry out its elimination, precipitating agents are added that form compounds of low solubility with the metallic elements and facilitate their separation.
  • Addition of defoamers. One of the most unwanted processes in paint sludge is the formation of foam, which makes it difficult to separate the paint later. Foams are formed due to air bubbles being trapped inside the sludge after use and pouring of the paints, and due to the presence of surface active agents present in the paints, the bubbles rise to the surface and combine, forming foams. For this reason, in most cases it is necessary to add antifoam agents that reduce the surface tension of the sludge, inhibiting and modifying the formation of foam.
  • Biocides. Biocidal agents are designed to kill microorganisms that may be present in sludge and inhibit their growth and development. In addition, they intervene to avoid the generation of bad odors in the sludge.

Paint sludge reuse routes

Nowadays, one of the main global concerns is the environmental impact that the dumping of industrial waste can have. Day by day, the demand for production is greater, and, therefore, the quantities of discharges produced are also greater. Therefore, the trend to initiate, develop and implement environmental policies in the company is booming. As we have seen in today’s blog, paint sludge is complex to manage due to its properties and its characterization as hazardous waste. However, research has been initiated to give this waste a second life, that is, to carry out the recovery of sludge. However, the main objective of minimizing their production is not due.
One of the main lines of research related to the reuse of sludge is composting. Composting consists of the transformation of sludge into organic products rich in nutrients that can be used as fertilizers. The transformation that is carried out consists of oxidative processes carried out by microorganisms that release toxic compounds from the sludge matrix.foto 6Another focus of research is the recovery of the components of spilled paints for reuse in new formulations of dyes.
